Senator Dino Melaye loses election at Court of Appeal. See Nigerians reactions

On August 23, 2019, Kogi state election tribunal in Lokoja nullified the election and victory of Dino Melaye of Peoples Democratic Party and ordered INEC to conduct another election in Kogi West Senatorial district within 90 days, which the tribunal said will be the only way to settle the dispute between Mr Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressive Congress who according to News Agency of Nigeria had 66,902 votes against Dino’s 85,395 votes.

Dino Melaye however filed an Appeal to contest the verdict of the kogi state election tribunal for him to remain in office as the Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District.

In his notice of appeal dated September 5, Mr Melaye urged the Court of Appeal to dismiss the petition filed by Mr Adeyemi and confirm his victory. The senator’s appeal was filed on his behalf by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Rickey Tarfa.

Part of the appeal read this; “The provision of the law is that the name as used in Form CF001 is the only valid name that can be used to challenge the election of the appellant.

“The principle of equity accepted and applied by the majority members of the tribunal cannot override the provisions of the law in respect of the petition.

“The judgment of the tribunal was perverse and against the weight of evidence before it.”

On 11 October, 2019, Senator Dino Melaye himself took to his twitter handle to inform Nigerians that he has lost again at the tribunal after the tribunal upholds the judgment of the Election tribunal of August 10 in Lokoja, the Kogi state capital.
