Akwa Ibom Northwest: Akpabio withdraws from Senatorial Rerun

The Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswil Akpabio has withdrawn his interest for the Akwa Ibom state Northwest Senatorial District’s rerun election between him(APC) and Chris Ekpeyong of the People’s Democratic Party(PDP).

According to Akpabio, as a Minister, he cannot leave national ministerial assignment bestowed to him by President Muhammadu Buhari for a senatorial rerun. He has on Wednesday written to APC national Chairman, Adams Oshiomole for the party to replace him with another candidate as it goes in line with Sections 33 and 35 of the Electoral Act, 2010. He however urged APC to inform INEC of his intention.

The rerun verdict by a court of law is as a result of Akpabio rejecting INEC’s declaration of Senator Chris Ekpeyong as the winner of the February 23, Akwa Ibom Northwest Senatorial District. Hearing the case, the Court of Appeal in November, called for a rerun.

Akpabio was the Minority leader in the 8th Assembly under the All Progressive Congress(APC).
