A former military head of state, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, said ex-president Goodluck Jonathan saved the country from plunging into political crisis by conceding defeat in the 2015 presidential election that brought Muhammadu Buhari to power.
Abdulsalami on Thursday, February 7, 2019, made this known in Abuja at the one-day peace conference organised by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, with the theme “Peaceful Elections and National Development”.
He pointed out that Jonathan kept to his words that his ambition is not worth the blood of any Nigerian.
According to the former military head of state, the nation could not thank Jonathan enough for conceding the defeat even before the announcement of the presidential election result.
Abdulsalami stated this on Tuesday, November 20, 2018, at the public presentation of Jonathan’s book, titled My Transition Hours.
In a related development, the former head of state on Thursday, December 6, 2018, declared that he could not return to Aso Rock as a civilian president wondered what an aging man of 77 like him could do if elected into power.
Abdulsalami, said it was high time the old generation mentored and encouraged younger Nigerians to take over the leadership of the nation.
