Meet ALIYU ABBATI ABDULHAMEED the Name behind NIRSAL

The pioneer Chief Executive/Managing Director of Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending, NIRSAL Plc, Mr. Abdulhameed Aliyu Abbati, is an ambassador for the incorporation of the use of technology in the agricultural sector.

With a Bachelor’s degree Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology; a Masters Degree in Public Administration (with specialization in Public Policy) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and an Executive Masters Certificate in Project Management from the Project Management College of the United Kingdom, he garnered much academic knowledge with which to impact positively on the agribusiness.

As an Institutional development expert, Agricultural Economist, and a programme management specialist he has much experience in institutional development, process building and operational improvement.

Mr. Abdulhameed Aliyu is a Senior Associate Member of the Risk Managers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN) and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) and. He holds a fellowship of the Microfinance Association of the United Kingdom and the Institute of Credit Administration (ICA) in Nigeria and an Honorary membership of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN).

 

He is well known in the agricultural sector home and abroad as his experience stretches to consultancy services, commercial agricultural production and transformation, commodity marketing, input procurement and supplies, agricultural extension services and transportation and logistics. 

He therefore became the best candidate to lead an organization as large and far reaching as NIRSAL and within three years of leading NIRSAL, his innovative ideas have propelled the organization into national and international positive limelight and it has given back to Nigeria in form of eradicating unemployment as well as poverty to a significant extent.

He has moved NIRSAL forward and the organization has now extended its branches to all 36 states in Nigeria including the FCT.

Hence, the benefits it offers are easily accessible to all small scale farmers and other beneficiaries regardless of location. Under MR. Aliyu’s leadership and his initiatives of agricultural programmes, NIRSAL has positively reshaped the image of the agricultural business in Nigeria as a highly profitable and opportunity-opening business  for all regardless of age and qualifications. 

Leveraging on his experience in investment and risk management, he has given NIRSAL an image of a highly profitable organization, mitigating loses and increasing significantly profits. International organizations and commercial banks such as the African Development Bank (AfDB), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), have invested in NIRSAL under Mr. Aluyi’s leadership.  African countries like South Sudan and the Republic of Togo have reached to have the NIRSAL initiative replicated in their countries.

In the Republic of Togo, Mr. Aliyu spearheaded the Togo Incentive–based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (TIRSAL) initiative. In June 2018, he received an award of the Grande Chancellerie De L’Ordre Du Muno of the Republic of Togo from the President of Togo, Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, for successfully leading the team that established TIRSAL as well as for other achievements in Africa’s agricultural sector. 

With a rich blend of passion, formal learning, experience and hard work, Mr. Abdulhameed Abbati Aliyu became the first Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending, NIRSAL Plc. He is a well-educated and multi-talented Agricultural Economist, institutional development expert and programme management specialist. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration (with specialization in Public Policy) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He obtained from the Project Management College of the United Kingdom an Executive Masters Certificate in Project Management as well as educational qualifications from the Nigerian Defence Academy.

With an impressive experience portfolio in Commodity Marketing, Input Procurement and Supplies, Agricultural Extension Services and Transportation and Logistics. His experience in these numerous sectors of agriculture made him qualified to lead NIRSAL and he has effectively carried out his duties for close to three years. His ideas have birthed several agricultural programmes designed to enrich millions of small scale farmers and other value chain actors.

Since his appointment as the Chief executive of NIRSAL, NIRSAL offices have been extended to all 36 states in Nigeria and the FCT.

Under his leadership, NIRSAL has also extended its wings internationally as renowned international organizations in the agribusniess such as African Development Bank (AfDB), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), have developed business ties with the organization.

NIRSAL has also caught the attention of countries in Africa such as Rwanda, Togo, Uganda, South Sudan, Liberia, Benin Republic, and others. These countries desire to have the NIRSAL initiative replicated in their states.

Mr. Abdulhameed Abbati Aliyu, through his experience gathered through working at NIRSAL for close to three years have had to make decisions to move NIRSAL forward and this has trained him and set him up for international business.

Through his risk and investment management experience, and his passion for solving agricultural problems through technology, he has been able to introduce more investment opportunities for the agricultural business from commercial banks. 

Mr. Abdulhameed Aliyu is a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered) and a Senior Associate Member of the Risk Managers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN). He holds an Honorary membership of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) and a fellowship of the Microfinance Association of the United Kingdom and the Institute of Credit Administration (ICA) in Nigeria.

He is an ardent advocate of the use of technology to move the agribusiness forward and this he has passionately applied in NIRSAL towards Nigeria and Africa’s benefit.

In June, 2018, he was awarded the Grande Chancellerie De L’Ordre Du Muno of the Republic of Togo by Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, the president of the republic of Togo for successfully leading project TIRSAL (Togo Incentive–based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending) a replica of NIRSAL in the republic of Togo as well as for his other notable contributions into Africa’s agricultural sector. 

Mr. Aliyu Abdulhameed Abbati is the Managing Director/ Chief Executive officer of the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending, NIRSAL Plc (appointed in 2015). In the 22 years since his career in the agribusiness began, he has efficiently filled the roles of an Agricultural Economist, Institutional development expert, Programme management specialist and an Executive team member at NIRSAL prior to his appointment as the Chief executive officer. He obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree   in Agricultural Economics and Rural Sociology and a Masters Degree in Public Administration (with specialization in Public Policy) from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Then he moved on to obtain an Executive Masters Certificate in Project Management from the Project Management College of the United Kingdom. Such strong academic background combined with his experience, top notch leadership skills as well as technical competence, he has effected NIRSAL’s growth home and abroad. 

Mr. Abdulhameed is one of the most influential agribusiness ambassadors in Nigeria, and Africa. His experience ranges from Consultancy Services, Commercial Agricultural Production and transformation, Commodity Marketing, Input Procurement and Supplies to Agricultural Extension Services as well as Transportation and Logistics.

This large range of experience set him up as the best candidate to serve NIRSAL in a prominent leadership position.

He was appointed Chief executive officer of NIRSAL over three years ago and within this period, he has positively impacted on the growth of the organization. Under his leadership, NIRSAL has made available numerous agricultural programmes implemented for the aim of engaging and enriching millions of smallholder farmers and other value chain actors.

He has also brought NIRSAL’s goal of bridging the gap between agriculture and finance to effect the growth Nigeria’s economy, job opportunities as well as food security, to fulfilment. On the international scene, banks and organization alike have been investing in NIRSAL.

For instance, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN). He also ensures the continuous growth of NIRSAL and the agricultural sector in Nigeria by introducing technology in different facets of agriculture.

Having examined the profitability of NIRSAL, other African countries such as Liberia, Benin Republic, Rwanda, Togo, Uganda, South Sudan and several others have initiated contact with NIRSAL to have the model replicated in their countries.

In June 2018, Mr. Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, the President of Togo, bestowed the National Award of the Grande Chancellerie De L’Ordre Du Muno of the Republic of Togo on Mr. Aliyu for successfully leading the establishment team of the Togo Incentive–based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (TIRSAL/MIFA) – a replica institution of NIRSAL.

Mr. Aliyu is a Senior Associate Member of the Risk Managers Association of Nigeria (RIMAN), and an Honorary Member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN). He is a fellow at the Microfinance Association of the United Kingdom, the Institute of Credit Administration (ICA) in Nigeria, and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered).
