Pipeline Fire Exploision Kill Two, Injures Many, Property Worth Billions Burnt In Lagos

The residents of Ekoro area of Abule-Egba, Lagos State on Sunday around 8:30pm were struggling to escape in panic for safety as a pipeline reportedly owned by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) exploded killing two, injuring scores and properties worth billions razed by the inferno.

As at 2:45am Monday morning, the said fire was was still burning. Ngg.ng gathered from the some of the residents that the fire was caused by the activities of pipeline vandals.

Remember the Abule Egbe area on September 23, 2014 and December 19, 2018, similar incident occurred which took many lives and properties also worth billions was also destroyed from the activities of vandals. The government need to do a background checks on these pipeline areas to provide more security and laws for punishing pipeline vandals should be revisited and made more stringent.

An eyewitness, who identified himself simply as Ito, said the incident had created tension in the community, adding that many residents abandoned their homes for fear of being burnt.

When the fire started around 8:30pm, the Director-General, Lagos State Fire Service, Margaret Adeseye, was contacted and immediately personnel from the Agege, Alausa and Abesan fire stations were deployed to the fire scene.

Also when, the Director-General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyintolu was contacted, he confirmed the incident and said, “A raging fire from the explosion of a vandalised NNPC pipeline has caused panic among residents of Awori, U-turn and Pipeline communities in Abule-Egba. LASEMA and the Lagos State Fire Service are responding and on top of the situation.”

He confirmed that two adults died in the inferno, while 11 trucks laden with 40-foot containers as well as seven houses were razed by the fire.
