The Nigerian Lower legislative chamber, the House of Representatives have acknowledged the scenario of political influence on the power of an Attorney General of the Federation, hence have moved to separate the Office of the Attorney General from that of the Minister of Justice.
This bill was sponsored by Reps Chief Whip, Mohammed Tahir Monguno. The 1999 Constitution joined the two offices together. They have however acknowledged the fact that such creates room for political interference.
Hon. Monguno said he was sponsoring the bill based on his experience as a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Borno state, adding that at the moment too much power was vested on the Minister or Commissioner for Justice in combining the two offices.
The Bill has passed through Second reading at the Tuesday Plenary session.
